Organization Markets Washington State, Brings More International Students
OLYMPIA, Wash. – Study Washington, the association dedicated to promoting Washington state’s higher education opportunities to international students, exhibited for the first time ever at the 60th annual meeting of NAFSA, the Association of International Educators. Education has become an important export for the state, contributing over $268 million to the economy during the last year. Study Washington’s inaugural exhibition at the conference, which took place May 26-30 in Washington, D.C., was made possible by a grant from The Washington State Department of Community, Trade, and Economic Development.
Between 1959 and 2007, the number of international students at schools in Washington state has grown an astounding 1,031 percent, from a low of 1,031 students to an all time high of 11,663 students in 2006-07, according to statistics provided by the Institute of International Education.
“By bringing in international students to our state’s colleges and universities we’re helping to enrich and broaden the educational opportunities for everyone,” notes Carla Boon, chair of Study Washington and the director of international programs at Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake, Washington. “By doing more outreach at conferences like NAFSA, we can better promote our world class institutions and state to a global audience.”
Although the most popular destination for international students is still the United States, it is followed closely by the United Kingdom and destinations such as Germany, France, Australia, China, Japan and Canada. This data, compiled from the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the Institute of International Education’s Open Doors report, also shows that the U.S. lost 4 percent of the market share of international students from 2005 to 2006. Promoting the benefits of Washington state’s diverse educational options, tourism, successful international exports, and number of global companies is one way that Study Washington is combating this trend.
“As students enter the workforce, both here in Washington state and abroad, they’ll have benefitted from the unique learning opportunities that are available by having a diverse and international student body,” notes Cheryl Hansen, education business development manager for CTED. “Our employers benefit by having employees who better understand the international marketplace and who have colleagues located around the world.”
Study Washington, made up of approximately 40 member colleges, universities, independent schools and education service providers in Washington state, promotes the state as the best destination for international students who wish to study in the USA. The member schools of Study Washington represent all levels of higher education and are located throughout the state.
NAFSA’s 60th annual International Conference & Expo took place in Washington, D.C., and attracted more than 9,000 delegates from over 100 countries. Study Washington was one of over 400 exhibitors that showcased their study destinations, services, and products at the expo.
In addition to hosting a reception at the conference for nearly 100 attendees, during which Study Washington signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Thai International Education Consultants Association, there were approximately 200 visitors that stopped by the Study Washington booth to learn more about educational opportunities in the state.
